Issue 287 – Award-winning wildlife film-maker to visit Frome

Award-winning natural history film-maker, Simon King, will be visiting Frome next month to sign copies of his new book, ‘Wild Life’.

The extraordinary natural history film-maker will meet local people on Saturday 5th December at Hunting Raven bookshop in Cheap Street.
Simon can currently be seen co-presenting BBC Two’s Autumnwatch series where he films and presents live outside broadcasts from wildlife hotspots around the British Isles, including Shetland, Mull, the London Wetlands Centre and the Somerset levels.
He has won Bafta awards for his camerawork on Life in the Freezer and Planet Earth, for which he filmed a celebrated slow-motion sequence of a great white shark leaping out of the water to catch a Cape fur seal.
Simon’s career as a cameraman, producer and presenter of natural history films has taken him around the planet many times and led to the revelation of sights and natural events never recorded before.
It has also brought him face to face with mortal dangers and comic encounters, both with animals and people. He has been charged by enraged elephants, tossed by mountainous seas in the South Atlantic and attacked by a rabid cheetah, and has had many close shaves during the course of his career.
But whether confronting lions armed only with a shovel and a dodgy stomach or helping to liberate an angry hyena from a deep pit, humour peppers his often hair-raising experiences. He writes with humour, candour and sometimes great sadness of his rich and varied life experiences to date.
What started as a boyhood obsession (boiling badger heads to preserve the skulls – and pinning dead birds’ wings to his bedroom wall) has taken Simon to every continent on earth and made him one of the nation’s most beloved presenters of natural history.
Simon will be at Hunting Raven bookshop from 11.00 am – 12.00pm to meet people and sign copies of his new book ‘Wild Life’. The shop will also have copies of his new 2010 calendar which Hunting Raven can arrange for Simon to autograph for you.

• On Sunday 29th November, Frome will be celebrating its second Christmas Spectacular. Local children’s author Steve Voake will be at Hunting Raven to share his latest book for younger children – ‘Insect Detective’.
In collaboration with his cousin, children’s illustrator Charlotte Voake, Steve has produced a delightful book about his lifelong interest! He will also be reading from his series about Daisy Dawson, a little girl who can ‘talk to the animals’ – join the staff at Hunting Raven at 2.30pm for pre-Christmas fun!
