Issue 306 – Fundraiser takes on walk around Wales for Cancer Research UK

A Frome volunteer fundraiser is taking on a 500-mile trek around Wales in a bid to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Paul Parsons decided to attempt the challenge because he wanted to do something a little bit different in memory of his Aunt Pat who died of cancer. He set off on his mammoth walking challenge on Sunday and it will take him four weeks to complete the challenge.
Paul said, I wanted to do something for Cancer Research UK, and whilst going through some old university books I found one I studied by the 12th century bishop Gerald of Wales, and the idea of retracing his trek around Wales in 1188 immediately excited me.
“I set myself a fundraising target of £2,000 but would love to exceed that. I’ve spent much of my spare time heading off into the Somerset countryside training, but the average of 22 miles a day with full rucksack across the mountains of Wales is something quite different and I’m really looking forward to the challenge.
“If people wish to find out more about Gerald, the route, and if anyone would like to support my efforts, there are links on my website There is also a link to my facebook group which everyone is welcome to join.”
Helen Ryland, Cancer Research UK’s area volunteer manager for Frome and Somerset said, “We are absolutely delighted that Paul has decided to attempt such a unique challenge to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
“He has been doing lots of preparation and I’m sure he is going to have an amazing experience. I can’t thank him enough for his support and want to wish him all the very best on the 500-mile trek.”
Helen added, “Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer and continues to do so. However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters without whom we would not be able to fund our vital research.
