Issue 511 – 90th Anniversary Poppy Appeal Frome Swing Band Concert

To launch the 90th Anniversary Poppy Appeal, the Frome Swing Band is holding an afternoon concert at the Merlin Theatre, Frome, on Sunday 31st October from 2.00pm to 4.30pm.

Local Poppy Appeal organiser, Jane Wood, says she is delighted that the Merlin is able to host what should be a wonderful concert.
Local musicians and vocalists will bring the famous big band sounds of the past to the present, with Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Henry Mancini and others being sure to evoke memories, and inspire a new generation.
The Royal British Legion continues to serve and support past and present armed forces personnel and their families, 90 years after its inception in 1921. Fundraising goes on all year round, with the outward symbol being the Poppy Appeal in the two weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday, this year on 14th November.
All funds are essential to continue the work of the legion which, for 2011, has pledged to raise an extra £25 million over 10 years to cover the cost of running centres which will place it at the forefront of caring for the wounded of current conflicts. This will provide for the operation of personnel recovery centres across the country.
The legion will be in partnership with other armed forces charities, including Help for Heroes which is also investing £20million on the construction of purpose-built personnel recovery centres in various towns throughout the country. The centres will be operated by the British Army in partnership with The Royal British Legion for personnel from all three services. The first centre is expected to open in spring 2011.
Part of the £25million will also go towards the funding of a challenge centre. This will provide adventure training and sporting activity, delivered by a dedicated ‘battle back’ team, to challenge the injured and act as a ‘recovery accelerator’. The legion has never been more active in its dual role of caring and campaigning for our British Armed Forces and their families.
With special guests invited, make it an afternoon to acknowledge and recognise not only our local musical talent but also the work of the armed forces and of the Royal British Legion that helps to support them.
Tickets, £5 each are available from the Merlin Theatre box office on 465949. For more details,
