Issue 511 – Plans forge ahead for Cheese & Grain development

The Cheese and Grain has now produced a business plan to progress plans to bring into use the large space on the first floor above the foyer area – known as the Mezzanine. The new multi-use space will have a capacity of 100 and groups interested in its future use are asked to come forward.

This area is currently mainly used for storage. The plans are to fit out the space for use by groups for whom the main hall is too big, The Mezzanine would be suitable for meetings, community activities, training sessions and private hire.
The Mezzanine plan includes a multi-use main room with a capacity of up to 100 people, with direct lift and stair access from the foyer. Also there will be a side room, a kitchen/servery/bar, toilets and office space and plenty of storage, some of which could be made available to regular users.
Details of all this are included in the new Cheese and Grain business plan 2010-15 which will form the basis for funding applications to the National Lottery and other bodies. The business plan is supported by Community Matters, the national organisation that supports community groups.
In a recent report, their consultant Richard Usher, said, “The Cheese and Grain trustees and staff have produced a robust business plan and background papers that amply demonstrate the significant contribution of the organisation to the economic and social life of the town.
“Frome Town Council’s grant of £35,000 each year towards the running of the organisation results in a community facility used by 100,000 people each year and contributes more than £250,000 a year to the local economy. In relation to the consultants’ experience of other community venues across the South West region, this added value represents an excellent return on investment.
Carla Besley, chair of the trustees said, “This is an exciting opportunity for the people of Frome – a new meeting space right in the heart of the town. If your organisation is interested in using the new Mezzanine space, contact me at the Cheese and Grain on 01373 455768 for more details.”
