Issue 321 – Four men arrested for car thefts

Two men have been arrested by police investigating the theft of Vauxhall Corsas from the Frome and Shepton Mallet area.

At just after 8.00pm on Wednesday 16th February a Vauxhall Corsa was reported stolen from Lower Keyford. The vehicle was spotted by police and it stopped in Austin Close where two men ran from the car. Following a short pursuit one man was detained nearby and the other one ran into woods and was located by a police dog.
Both men were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. One suspect, aged 20, has been released on police bail pending further enquiries and the other, aged 16, remains in custody.
In a separate incident, two men have been arrested for burglary and thefts of two other vehicles. At 9.30pm on Tuesday 15th February, a Volkswagen Caddy Van was stolen from Cork Street. The vehicle was spotted by police near Evercreech and when it stopped two men ran off. A 27-year-old man from Frome was arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft of a motor vehicle. He was taken into custody and later released on police bail pending further enquiries.
At 12.30pm on Wednesday 16th February, a second man was arrested in Nightingale Avenue on suspicion of burglary. He is suspected of being involved in the theft of the Volkswagen Caddy van as well as a black Honda Jazz stolen later that night in Evercreech near to where the VW was abandoned. The Honda was recovered in Stonebridge Drive, a short distance away. The 19-year-old local man was interviewed in custody and later released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Speaking about the police activity, detective sergeant Tim Gillingham said, “In the past 48 hours we have recovered three stolen vehicles and arrested four people we suspect of being involved in the theft of cars from the area. We are really pleased with this result and believe it will have a positive impact on crime throughout the Frome and Shepton Mallet area.”
