Issue 323 – Last day for Frome Court

AFTER hundreds of years in the town, the last sitting at Frome Court is scheduled to take place this week on Wednesday 30th March.

The decision to close the court was announced last December by Justice Minister, Jonathan Djangoly, despite a review by Lord Justice Goldring who said he could not justify the closure of Frome Court.
On the morning of the 30th March the final youth court is due to take place, with the last sitting of an adult trial in the afternoon. From the 1st April, cases will be transferred to Yeovil Magistrates’ Court, some 30 miles away.
According to a spokesperson for Her Majesty’s Court Service, “The disposal strategy for the building is still under consideration.”
The closure of the court has been met with dismay by Frome solicitor John Killah, who recently criticised key figures in Frome for “rolling over” and accepting the closure as inevitable.
While he pushed for a judicial review, Claire Hudson, leader of the Mendip Liberal Democrats, said that Mendip councillors had not voted for a judicial review as it would come at a significant cost to local taxpayers.
