Issue 332 – Charity fete continued despite the weather!

The Grand Gala Fete for the Frome Lions and Frome Selwood Rotary Club was held at the Old Show Ground on Saturday 16th July when, despite the atrocious weather, funds will have been raised for local charities.

For the stalls that did manage to set up and keep battened down, a good hearted atmosphere was ensured by Pete Daymon-Johns who compered the whole event. Imogen Sellers, well known local presenter on Points West, attended for the official opening and was thanked by the organisers and presented with a bouquet. Imogen also drew out the prize winners for the Lions draw, first prize of £100 went to Anne Oakley.
Besides the commercial and charity stalls, entertainment was provided in the village ring. Divas dance troupe carried on valiantly with their Olympics routine, by now completely drenched, as were the country and western singing duet. The dog agility demonstration and solo singer faired better, and we believe the cricket match adjoining the event managed to play a few overs between showers.
All in all a day for teas, hot dogs and burgers, and good old fashioned support for good causes. Thanks are extended to the many who invested so much time and effort in arranging and helping at the Grand Gala Event and to those who generously donated prizes. Many thanks also go to the Carnival Queens who braved the weather, Town Crier Mike Bishop, and the Bonham Christie Trust for their support. The Jenson Button auction was postponed to a later date. Over £2,000 was raised in total, down on last year, but considering the weather a great effort by all.
