New Mayor is chosen

FROME has a new mayor, cllr Pippa Goldfinger, and deputy mayor, cllr Helen Starkie.

Both cllr Goldfinger and cllr Starkie are members of the Independents for Frome group (IfF), who took over the town council last year. Cllr Goldfinger, who has just completed her year as deputy mayor, takes over the mayoral chain from cllr Nick White.

Cllr Goldfinger, a structural engineer who is now studying for an MA in town and country planning, says that maintaining the town’s architectural heritage, as well as supporting contemporary design, is something she is passionate about. She said, “I really believe Frome is a beautiful town, and keeping the town up together and looking good will attract business to the town. And it’s about civic pride as well.

“When you get involved in local politics you meet all these people who do voluntary work and take part in the life of the town. I’d really like to increase public participation; more people coming to public meetings, council meetings, volunteering – that’s what makes Frome special.”

Cllr Goldfinger has chosen three local causes to support in her year as mayor: Positive Action on Cancer (PAC), the Gateway Club, and Active and In Touch, a project where volunteers support those who are isolated or out of touch with the community. “They are all good causes,” she said. “PAC needs constant funding and has lost its core funding. Gateway is one Nick told me about, that he would like to have supported having learnt all about it last year. Active and in Touch is a great idea – I met an old gentleman at an event who hadn’t been out in years, and I was very touched by that.”

Outgoing mayor Nick White, who was voted in as the Independents for Frome’s first mayor when they came onto the council last year, said his mayoral year had been “the fastest year” of his life. He said, “Being mayor has given me a much greater knowledge of our wonderful town and the people who live here. I have met many people who are new to me and reacquainted myself with many old friends. “Thank you to everyone in Frome who have been very warm and welcoming at events that I have attended and supported me in my fundraising endeavours. It has been a great pleasure and a huge honour to be your mayor and I will leave with many happy memories of my year in office.”
