Frome Canoe Club held a canoe slalom event on Saturday and Sunday 9th and 10th June at Langham Farm, Rode, as part of the national series of events throughout the UK.
It was a chance for competitors of all ages and abilities to take part in a race on white water. Beginners were particularly welcome. The recent rain had raised water levels in the River Frome and turned the course into a challenging stretch of fast flowing water. The Frome Team achieved some notable successes over the weekend, with 18 club members taking part. Two impressive results were Chris Bartlett coming first on Saturday in the Division 4 Men’s race and Bex Tanti coming first on Sunday in the Division 4 Women’s race. Over the weekend five club members were promoted from Division 4 to Division 3 because of their individual performances: Kieran Fewell, Bill Fryer, James Bennett, Chris Bartlett and Bex Tanti. There were four categories: Kayak Men’s, Kayak Women’s, Canadian Singles and Canadian Doubles. The course was 200m long with 18 gates and each paddler had two runs down the course. Andy Bell, organiser said, “The weekend has been a big success, and the help and support we received from our volunteers over the weekend has been fantastic. It has been great seeing so many of our members taking part in a national event. Our next national competition is on 15th July on the river in Frome Town Centre. Spectators are welcome!”
