Vince Cable launches new multi-million pound College extension

VINCECable, MP, has officially opened a new multi-million pound extension to Frome College, that will help improve the college’s sixth form programme.

The Government’s Business Secretary officially opened the new building alongside Somerton and Frome MP David Heath on Thursday 19th of July. The extension, which is called The Futures Centre, will allow more pupils to stay on at sixth form as well as offer more post-sixteen educational courses.

Wendy Missions, principal at Frome Community College said, “The staff and students were delighted that Vince Cable and David Heath could join us to open the extension.

“The Futures Centre is a multi-million pound initiative and a key development for post-16 education in this area.

“It will extend the range of courses we can offer in both traditional A-levels and more vocational courses such as BTEC, as well as providing state-of-the-art ICT and study facilities.

“Our sixth form has grown in recent years and is under pressure to grow further.  With young people now staying in education until they are 17 years old, we wanted to ensure we could offer first-class courses which would help all of them into university, training or work.

“The investment that has been made here is a sign of confidence in the work we do, and a real boost for education and training in Frome and the surrounding area.”

The Futures Centre has been four years in development.

The centre includes study and common room facilities, an ICT hub which can house several classes at once, and specialist rooms for computing, business studies, sport, health and a range of A-levels and vocational qualifications.

Post-16 students were involved in the design and planning stage, and several of them have recently graduated from university and been invited back to see the fruits of their labour.
