It’s Carnival time!

FROME is gearing up for all the fun and frivolities of Carnival, which will take place on Saturday 22nd September.

The children’s afternoon procession starts at Victoria Park at 2.30pm on Carnival Day, with the evening procession leaving at 7.00pm from the Marston Trading Estate. Floats are able to enter Carnival right up to an hour before the event starts; for entry forms and more information on how to enter, please visit www.fromecarnival.org.uk

Frome has had its own Carnival for over 100 years and the event is always a highlight in the town’s annual calendar.

June Barnes, of the Carnival committee says, “It started as a very small thing and over the years it has grown. I think people like the tradition of the Carnival. People like both spectating and taking part – when you think about it, there’s opportunities for all aspects from artists and dressmakers to carpenters.

“It’s good fun, let’s hope we have the weather for it, and we’d love to see everybody come and enjoy it and be generous. This is why we need Carnival, it’s about the enjoyment and it’s about the finances. Our primary aim is to raise money for the Frome Carnival Charity which is entirely for the people of Frome. We’ve got a number of events coming up before the big day, which we’d love people to support so we’ve got enough money to do Carnival. Then we can use Carnival itself to raise money for the charity.”

Everyone is welcome to get involved in Carnival, whether it be creating a float or helping out as a volunteer for a short period of time.

June says, “Our committee is getting smaller so we could do with more people coming on. We’d also welcome anyone who can help on the day, or in advance selling programmes – you could just take a bundle and sell them in your road.”

The children’s afternoon procession starts at Victoria Park at 2.30pm, going up Weymouth Road, left into Somerset Road, left into Butts Hill, Wesley Slope, left into Christchurch Street West, left into Weymouth Road and into the park via Weymouth Road park gates.

The evening procession commences at 7.00pm from the Marston Trading Estate, goes along The Butts, Butts Hill, Wesley Slope, Bath Street, Market Place, North Parade, Berkley Road, Badgers Hill, before reaching the football ground.
