A FROME man is six months into a year-long hair growth challenge to raise money for Dorothy House.

Rob Marshall began the challenge on Saturday 5th October 2013 and will go a whole year without shaving or having his hair cut.

He is attempting the challenge as his father-in-law, David Wilson, lost his battle with oesophageal cancer and spent the end of his life at the Dorothy House Hospice.

Rob said, “I’ve found the challenge so far pretty good. I don’t actually want to get rid of it ever but my wife isn’t such a fan! I wouldn’t say there is any difficulty to having the beard just inconvenience, especially whilst eating and drinking. People I see every day still comment on the beard – especially my daughters who think it’s the best toy in the house! But the most reaction comes from people I haven’t seen for a while. It does tend to be a bit of a conversation starter as well, especially in the pub and people do tend to ask if they can touch it quite a lot!

“If we could hit the £2,000 target it would mean the world to us all. We know we’re only raising a fraction of what is needed, but every penny we raise  is so worthwhile.

“I also entered the British Beard and Moustache Championships which is being held this year in Bath on September 13th and with the help of a new beardy friend, we have managed to get Dorothy House as one of the two beneficiaries of the championships which is excellent.

“Unfortunately David lost his battle recently but he was at Dorothy House as he wished, and his family was with him and he passed peacefully after a happy day laughing and smiling with his family. Although this was a lot sooner than we had all expected, it was nice to see him so happy even at the very end of his journey.”
