End of Term at Edventure: Frome

Eight young apprentices brought their year at Edventure: Frome to a close on Friday 13th June with official certificates from the town council after they had given presentations on their work.

Over the year, apprentices played key roles in setting up and building a new community workspace and venue which supports young people and community groups to make their ideas happen in Welshmill; designed and ran a campaign as part of  Participate Frome; designed and carried out consultation in the Dippy in Frome on behalf of Frome Town Council.

They also organised and facilitated workshops for about 1000 students at Frome Community College to inspire them about social enterprise; set up a portable wood-fired pizza oven business to give employment to young, long-term unemployed adults in Frome; and organised music events to promote young local musicians.

These practical activities form the core of hands on learning with guidance, support and training from staff.

Before handing out the certificates, Cllr Peter Macfadyen, independent Mayor of Frome named Edventure as one of his Community Projects for his year of office. He said, “I believe passionately that conventional education doesn’t meet the needs of everyone and we need experimental, adventurous, risky, evolutionary players in the mix.  It’s been a huge pleasure to be involved with Edventure since they came to Frome and I really look forward to building on this.”

Each year Edventure offers 10 young people between 18 and 30 years old the opportunity to learn how to make their ideas happen through practical team challenges, and provides support for people to start up their own projects, businesses or self-employment. Edventure Frome’s nine-month training in social entrepreneurship starts in September, and applications are still open until the end of July.
