Frome volunteer cycling to raise awareness of rescued dogs

FROME’S Jan Lake is set to play her part in a national cycle event being organised by Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE).

The charity’s Land’s End to John o’ Groats challenge comes to Somerset on 6th August, and Jan plans to pedal her way along a section which will arrive in Bristol at around 11.00am the following day.

Jan said, “GRWE is an amazing charity and last year we happily rehomed 79 dogs across Somerset.”

Jan smiled and added, “We have a very intrepid GRWE volunteer who will carry the flag along the whole journey, with mere mortals like myself joining his entourage for various stages of the journey.”

Jan has dedicated her participation to two very special dogs who recently arrived at GRWE.

Jan explained, “Artie and Aran are ‘firsts’. They arrived with us from a dog pound in Ireland which has a macabre record – until now, euthanising every greyhound arriving there.

“The pound takes in ex-racers who are put to sleep by vets for a fee of £20. Many have had their ears cut off to remove their distinguishing tattoos, before being handed in to the pound.

“Young, healthy greyhounds are crammed into kennels to await their fate; the systematic destruction of dogs who could’ve been happy family pets happens every Friday morning.”

GRWE are now seeking homes for Artie and Aran, the first dogs to be handed over to the rescue by the pound.
