Frome young person graduates from unique mentoring scheme

Nathan Wiltshire, aged 14, from Frome, graduated from the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and education charity AQA’s Unlocking Potential scheme, at a celebration to mark the end of the 2014 programme on Monday 10th November.

Nathan, who is a student at North Hill House in Fromefield, was nominated by his teacher Richard Herring to take part in the unique mentoring scheme which pairs teenagers who have faced personal challenges with Team GB Olympians and elite athletes.

He was teamed with two-time Paralympic Gold medalist Graham Edmunds. Graham provided the support and guidance Nathan needed to deliver his local community project. Nathan is a talented scooter rider so he chose to give a presentation on scootering to his school and a workshop to demonstrate scooter safety techniques.

AQA and Dame Kelly Holmes Trust are now calling on teachers in Frome to nominate their students for the 2015 scheme. The young people will have the opportunity to work with sporting stars including Olympian and Double Commonwealth swimming champion, Ross Davenport.

Unlocking Potential develops the skills, confidence, motivation and self-belief of the young people, who with that extra support will achieve the best possible outcomes in their education.
