The knives are out for the Mayor of Frome!

Mayor of Frome Peter Macfadyen recently invited Frome residents to bring along their blunt knives, chisels and other small tools to be sharpened in return for donations to the mayor’s three charities for the year, the POD Youth Club; Edventure and Fair Frome.

In previous years, Peter had undertaken all the sharpening on his own – this year he was supported by the Shedders from the Frome Men’s Shed, and some of the apprentices from Edventure.

The sharpening session took place in the Frome Men’s Shed at the Welshmill Hub, and started after a master class in sharpening from the Mayor, Ben Horne (from Chisel and Grain) , and Peter Gulliver.  The volunteers then started their sharpening work – Over 100 ‘edges’ honed.  Peter was delighted that the work raised over £100 for the mayor’s charities.

A Frome Men’s Shedder commented, “I’ve been sharpening chisels and knives my whole life and I learnt more about how to do it properly today than ever before. We’re just so pleased we’ve helped the Mayor’s charities, and some of the people in Frome.”

The mayor thanked Steve Lawless from Sergeants Ironmongers in Catherine Hill for collecting the knives, chisels, secateurs, and other tools, and ensuring they all had labels.

Patrick Abrahams from the Frome Men’s Sheds said, “This kind of work is exactly what Men’s Sheds are for – having fun, learning and sharing valuable skills, and helping the community.”
