UK’s first SHARE shop to open in Frome

A unique new shop which allows people to share and borrow (almost) anything, is opening its doors in Frome next week.

‘Share’, which is breathing new life into an empty shop on the Bridge, aspires to allow people to share and borrow everything from DIY equipment, to cutlery, and from furniture and arts & crafts materials to children’s books and clothes

It’s also a place for people to share skills and connect with others in the community.

“The people of Frome are invited to celebrate the launch of the UK’s first shop dedicated to sharing on Thursday 30th April,”  says Biz Bliss, one of the people behind the new shop. “In keeping with the ethos of the shop, attendees can bring a dish to share and celebrate from 6.00pm onwards. All are welcome to our launch party where Mayor Peter MacFadyen will kick us off with the cutting of the ribbon followed by games, live music, food and a whole lot of sharing.”

Drills and gardening tools have been the most requested items on the SHARE wishlist so far, and organisers are now calling for donations of these items from the local community.

The project is currently recruiting a manager and a team of volunteers to run the shop. Set up by a team of apprentices, the SHARE shop will be handed over to the new manager after the initial set-up, for the continuation of the service for the local community.

The organisers have also called on local people to help out with the re-fit of the shop which has been taking place until Thursday 23rd April. All are welcome to drop in between 10.00am and 6.00pm, for anything from half an hour to half a day.

Anna Francis, Frome Town Council’s recycling and energy officer said, “This is a brilliant project to get involved with. It means everyone can access a wide range of items they need whilst cutting costs, carbon and waste. There was a real buzz when the shop opened at the Independent Market in April. We now just need everyone to get involved – sharing items and time where possible. If anywhere can make this work, Frome can.”

‘SHARE’ is a joint initiative from Frome Town Council, Edventure:Frome, the Cheese & Grain and Sustainable: Frome. Eight unemployed young people are setting up the enterprise as part of their apprenticeship with Edventure:Frome.
