Musician goes it alone to entertain the community

ALOCALblues guitarist has set up a music service with a difference with the help of the Prince’s Trust, and is looking forward to bringing a new variety of talent to the area.

Frome resident of three years, Nick Balura, started his own initiative, Nicoustics, last year, which delivers guitar lessons, live performances and musical entertainment to care homes in Somerset and Wiltshire. Nick has also recently taken control of an open mic night at The Griffin on Milk Street.

Self-taught guitarist Nick said, “I took the step  into self-employment after undertaking several jobs which just didn’t give the inspiration and motivation that I get from teaching and playing the guitar. I’m glad I did, and it’s great to be able to do something I enjoy for a living.

“My father, who owns Cobwebs Antiques shop, encouraged me to pursue these ambitions through my own business.

“At the moment I primarily provide musical entertainment to around 20 care homes in Somerset and Wiltshire. In the future I would like to expand the business to cover more care homes, weddings, corporate events, and entertainment venues in the local area. I would also like to write music for advertising and TV soundtracks. One of my ultimate goals is to become a session musician.

“I’ve had an amazing response from the residents and staff everywhere I perform; they all enjoy the variety of songs I play, which makes the job well worthwhile! It’s a lovely feeling giving a little pleasure back to those who have probably fought in  wars for us.

“I have received amazing help from the Prince’s Trust as I’ve become self-employed. I didn’t have the funds to start the business myself; the charity provided  support through short term funding and business mentoring.

“They have provided me with a mentor right from the start and we meet regularly to discuss any issues I have with my business.  I’ve found their advice to be invaluable!”

If you would like Nick to play at your event or give lessons, you can contact him on nicoustics@gmail. com or 07850 214178.
