Coming up at the Merlin

THE Merlin Theatre has an exciting and varied summer line-up with Matilda, West Side Story and Othello all being screened live in August.

On Friday 14th August, see a condensed version of the West End’s hit, Matilda the Musical, performed by the Tri.Art Junior Summer School. This abridged version (20 minutes) of the classic London musical, features five much loved songs: Naughty, The School Song, The Chokey, Bruce and Revolting Children and with linking passages and excerpts, makes a wonderful mini version of the current West End favourite.

Tim Minchin’s Matilda is the captivating musical masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dares to change her destiny.

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s Othello will be screened at the Merlin Theatre on Wednesday 26th August.

Othello is the greatest general of his age. A fearsome warrior, loving husband and revered defender of Venice against its enemies. But he is also an outsider whose victories have created enemies of his own, men driven by prejudice and jealousy to destroy him.

As they plot in the shadows, Othello realises too late that the greatest danger lies not in the hatred of others, but his own fragile and destructive pride.

After more than a decade working in film and television on projects from Star Wars to Holby City, Hugh Quarshie returns to the RSC to play Shakespeare’s Othello. He was last seen there in Faust  and Julius Caesar (1996).

Hugh will play opposite Lucian Msamati in the role of Iago, returning to the RSC following his role as Pericles in 2006.

The production is directed by Iqbal Khan (Much Ado About Nothing, 2012).

Tickets are adults £15, concessions £10
