Asbestos delays work at leisure centre

FUSIONLifestyle’s £2million renovation of Frome Leisure Centre will take longer than expected after contractors found more asbestos than expected at the site.

Work began on the new state-of-the-art sports facility in October this year, and was expected to be completed in three months. It has been announced that the reopening will be delayed by a few weeks following the setback.

Rob Taylor, Mendip contract manager for Fusion Lifestyle said, “Works have already progressed significantly at the Frome site and, while progress is steady, we have discovered that asbestos works were more extensive than initially expected.

“This will impact the completion date by a few weeks which is extremely disappointing. However, customer care and safety remain our first priority and we are looking forward to making the centre the best it can be for the community.

“We are going to do everything we can to minimise the delay and will provide consistent updates via email newsletters and our Facebook page.

“In the interim, our existing members’ subscriptions will continue to be discounted to reflect the disruption caused by the work.

“We will also continue to offer our most popular classes at the temporary location in Frome College and members can of course use our alternative Mendip facilities at Wells Leisure Centre, Tor Sport & Leisure Centre and Strode Swimming & Fitness Centre.”

Staff have indicated on the centre’s Facebook page that it is hoped the work will be complete by the end of February 2016.

The presence of asbestos in building works can slow progress because it is treated as hazardous waste and must be disposed of in a controlled manner. Asbestos fibres, which can be breathed in when released from broken building materials, can increase the risk of serious lung problems and  cancer.

Fusion Lifestyle was awarded the contract to renovate the centre in 2014, and is investing £2million into improving the facilities.
