Frome welcomes brilliant live band Laid Blak to The Wheatsheaves in Bath Road on Saturday 5th December.
Laid Blak have conquered dancefloors and festivals for a decade with an irresistibly smooth urban sound which crosses genres, appealing to lovers of dancehall, garage, drum and bass — or anything else with a killer tune and fat beat. Daily Music Guide says, “It would be unthinkable to see them play and not be left with a smile on your face.”
The last year has been a rollercoaster for new Wheatsheaves landlords, Lark Porter and Toby Prin. On top of the challenge of launching a brand new business with a young family they have been battling old negative venue reputation and all that entails, plus almost losing the venue – all while launching an independent permanent late night live music and arts venue which has never been done before in Frome.
Lark said, “The last year has been amazing and terrifying but also very rewarding. We have had well over 25,000 people to our events this past year. We have hosted over 100 live bands, over 260 individual events, offered young and older talent a place to play and provided local promoters a low risk place to hold events.
“We have hosted well known DJ’s Ed Solo, Krafty Kuts & Asbo Disco, charity events, arts shows and markets to name but a few. We provide work for over 30 local people, we have had events spanning all genres of music including Jazz, Funk, Disco, D&B, Reggae, House, Northern Soul, Techno, Latin, Rock, Indie, Ska, Folk, Rock & Roll, Hip Hop, Chart, Punk, Motown, 80’s, 90’s… the list goes on…
“We haven’t been visited by everyone yet as I think some people are still nervous due to the previous management, and they don’t always understand that as a venue it’s different on different nights – you have to choose an event you are interested in. SO I invite the people of Frome, pick a gig or genre you love and come and see what we are all about – you won’t be disappointed.”
This December Frome’s Venue’s original launch night Motown band Charlie Miller and the Soul agents return for a Christmas special on Saturday 19th December amongst many other special events, including FARCUE Christmas show on 17th December, Club Tropicana 80’s night on 12th December, JFB and Too Many T’s on 18th December plus Local Legends The Wheel of Four Tunes hosting Xmas eve. Plus the traditional Boxing Day Rave.

This year has just been the beginning. Lark said, “We had to start conservatively as we didn’t have a lot of time before opening, or much money. We got this far with hard work, determination and a vision, and now big changes will start to happen.
“The next step is a new name and a new look which we have decided on but haven’t announced yet. This will include; a redecoration of the front of the building and the outside spaces, offering delicious and affordable food and launching our website.
“In the spring we will re-launch the upstairs bar as a relaxed cocktail and chill out space so customers can choose whether to dance downstairs, relax with drinks upstairs or hang out in the outside spaces. We have a plethora of events planned for the new year including comedy and theatre, so please watch this space.”
The support this venue gained in the early part of this year was unprecedented, thousands emailed and signed petitions when it was announced they had been handed a 10 day closure notice and because of the supporters the venue stayed open.
Lark & Toby said, “THANK YOU for all the support this past year. We were amazed, astounded and touched by your positive feedback and we will continue to work hard to improve the venue and provide quality entertainment for all people of Frome.
“Please tell us if there is something you want and we will endeavour to provide it. If you want to put on your own event then come talk to us because we can help!”
