Frome Park progress in national competition

Frome Park had a great win away against a strong Purnells team in the National competition, ‘The Tony Allcock Trophy’, this is a mixed double rink competition.

Winning a very close contest by 3 shots overall after a very good game with both teams winning on 1 rink, even on the last end the match could have swung either way but the park bowlers held their nerve to go home victorious.  The winning rink for Frome was; Joan Curtis, Richard Phillips, Jean Bartlett & Nigel Hunt who led for nearly all the game to record a 5 shot winning margin over their opponents.

The men have had a couple of close matches in the Mid-Somerset league, firstly against Street they lost by 6 shots with both teams winning on 2 rinks each but Street just sneaked it on shots 72-66 with the Park picking up 4 points.  The best winning rink for the Park was; Pete Wheeler, Terry Drew, Richard Phillips & Steve West who won 6 of the last 8 ends to record a 29-15 victory.  This was followed by a great win over Shepton Mallet, where Frome had 3 winning rinks all by 1 or 2 shots but only sneaked home by the narrowest of margins after the other rink lost by 4 shots. Pick of the wins was the rink of Kim Pitts, Malcolm Jepson, Richard Phillips & Colin Henning who secured a very tight, low scoring match 16-14.

Frome Park men’s “A” & “B” teams had a disappointing Saturday in the County league with both sides losing. The A team lost by only 1 shot overall to Alexandra Park, Bath 59-60, winning on 1 rink to pick up 2 points. The rink of Kim Pitts, Dave Whitehead, Trevor Elms & Alan Totterdell having a really good time of it with some good bowling to win by 25-10.  Unfortunately the B team lost on all rinks against top of the table Prattens, 43-70.

On Friday night in the mixed league, the leaders and undefeated side of Street visited the park and in a change of fortunes the home side produced their best form to date to see off the visitors by 68-49 and winning on all 3 rinks to secure all 12 points.  The best rink for Frome was; Val Church, Joan Curtis, Eddie Maidment & Trevor Elms who dominated for most of the game to win comfortably by 28-14.

The mixed team did however lose a friendly against Wilton by 78-72, the best rink for Frome Park was; Viv Lake, Paul Ellis, Lesley Elms & Terry Drew who held off a late challenge to secure a win by 22-18.

The ladies have had a good couple of weeks with wins in the Wild league against Paulton and Castle Cary, on both occasions winning on 2 rinks to pick up 10 points.  Against Paulton they won 53-47 with the best triple being; Val Smith, Lesley Elms & Jean Bartlett 18-10 and by a closer margin of 50-48 away  at Castle Cary, on this occasion the best triple was; Olive Maidment, Lesley Elms & Margaret Jennings 19-14.  The ladies are certainly starting to put some good performances together and are looking to continue this way in the coming weeks to put in a strong challenge for the top spot.
