Students unveil their solution to the housing crisis

STUDENTS from Edventure:Frome have unveiled their latest project, the Edspace – a modular, flat pack, semi-independent living space that could help the Frome housing crisis.

The team of six students showcased their project at the Welsh Mill Hub at the end of March.

Student Hettie Colquhoun said, “The team would like to thank everyone who joined them for an evening of discussions, music and food.

“Edspace is a company that forms a partnership between Edventure:Frome  a school for community enterprise, and Chisel & Grain, a carpentry and building business in Frome.

“This project began in 2016 when a previous group of students designed and built the first prototype, along with the help of Graham Burgess and Ebanie Powell, two local architectural designers. Their brief was to come up with a creative way of helping the local community with the housing crisis; to provide, good, ethical work for the people involved; to make profit for purpose.

“Edspace is now a product available for purchase. The size and layout can be customised and the structure is easily installed within a day, with minimal requirements for foundations and access.

“In 2018, this new and diverse team of students worked on:

“Reducing environmental impact and improving efficiency through the design and build of the Edspace interior, using offcuts from the manufacture process.

“Designing new sales materials and expanding their marketing strategies.

“Developing a collaboration with local education providers and Chisel and Grain to offer training and personal development.

“Exploring exciting new opportunities for use as semi-independent housing with Mendip YMCA and other homelessness charities.”
