Frome’s club runners go the distance in May

Soaring temperatures did not deter Frome’s club runners from putting in stellar performances in races both near and far from home in the last half of May.

The Westbury 5K on Tuesday, 15th May, gave local athletes the chance to participate in a mid-week evening race that follows a flat course over three laps. This was the first of a series of four races to be held throughout the summer. Joseph Donworth stormed home for Frome in an impressive time of 00:16:53 to bag fourth position overall. He was closely followed by Gary Eagle in 00:19:09 and Peter Reed in 00:20:55.

Saturday, 19th May offered up a challenge of a different kind with the Albion Running West Country Ultra Flat 50. Vicki Trundle completed this 50-mile off-road course from Taunton to Minehead in a time of 12:30:00. The following day saw the return of the Dilton Dash, a popular multi-terrain 10K race, starting and finishing in the village of Dilton Marsh. Ted Sprules was first to finish for Frome in a time of 00:47:27. He was followed by Pete Larman in 00:49:04, Ian Holmes in 00:49:29, Giles Padfield in 00:49:50 and Steve Carroll in 00:55:38. Julie Chilvers was the first female Frome club runner to finish, posting a time of 00:57:12. She was followed by Rachel Brenni in 00:58:52, Emma Surridge in 01:01:25, Anne Porter in 01:06:00, Adrian Mead in 01:08:35 and Emma Evans in 01:09:18.

The following Sunday, over 1,000 runners lined up for the Casterbridge Half marathon. Among them were a select group of Frome’s finest. James Arnall-Culliford (MV40) finished in a time of 01:30:09, earning himself first position in category and 10th position overall. Harry Ebdon (MV50) crossed the line in 01:54:44, followed by Lucy Gaffney (FV40) in 02:13:06. On Saturday 26th May, club runner Chris Chivers entered the Taunton Triathlon, completing the 400m swim, 21K bike ride and 5.7K run in 01:48:44.
