School awarded £1,000 to buy new books

BERKLEY School in Frome has been awarded a grant of £1,000 to buy new books for their library.

The school has been looking to raise money to provide new books for the school library, as well as funds to revamp their library area.

Luci Pickford, assistant headteacher, applied for the grant and was delighted that their application was a success. She said, “Berkley First School is a small school with under 100 pupils. We are very keen to deliver a broad and creative curriculum for all our pupils but unfortunately, like so many village schools, we struggle for funds. It is great that there are grants out there available for schools like us.

“This donation will be put towards buying new books to promote the love of reading and allow the children to take home books from our library, as well as reading scheme books from the classroom. The children are super excited to buy some modern books and have already been requesting books by popular authors!

“We cannot thank the ‘Ernest Cook Trust’ enough for their support. We are really excited to spend the money and upgrade the children’s library.”

Berkley First School is located on the outskirts of Frome and currently have vacancies in years 3 and 4.  Please phone the office on 01373 830455 if you would like any more information.
