Donkey rides, deckchairs, buckets and spades at Frome-On-Sea this weekend

Frome-On-Sea, The Frome Independent’s pop-up urban beach, is set to return on Sunday 5th August, complete with golden sand, buckets and spades, vintage deckchairs, ice creams and donkey rides.
Every August, the team behind Frome’s monthly market bring a real beach to the Market Yard, including a chance for children to take a donkey ride from outside Frome Library. First dreamt up in 2014 as a way to increase visitor numbers to a historically quiet August market, since then, Frome-on-Sea has proven to be the most popular event in The Frome Independent’s calendar.
The team of dedicated locals who are responsible for setting up the market each month, embark on the task of installing the four tonnes of sand required to create Frome-On-Sea, which has been described as Somerset’s smallest, and briefest urban beach. Director of The Frome Independent, Tabitha Clayson, explains why the beach proves so popular each year, and why it’s such an important fixture in the market’s year of events.
She said, “It’s something that both market-goers and members of the community really enjoy. We love seeing people from across the spectrum of Frome’s diverse community down at the beach – it may seem like a lot of hard work but it’s worth it to see our fellow Frome residents enjoying a day at the beach without having to leave town!”
Last year’s Frome-On-Sea was supported by a successful Crowdfunder campaign which The Frome Independent ran in collaboration with Frome Town Council. The campaign raised money to fund maintenance of the Village Green area and their other free community activities. The market team gave away merchandise, prizes and annual membership to their Market Maker membership club to everyone who pledged money to the campaign.
This summer holiday, the market team and their traders are running another prize draw and giveaway to anyone who signs up to their membership club, the Market Makers by Sunday 2nd September. Market Makers are given exclusive discounts and offers from lots of traders and many of Frome’s independent shops both on market days and in between.
Market maker membership costs £20 for 12 months, and membership fees go directly towards funding the market’s free community activities (such as Frome-On-Sea) the music and children’s art activities down at the Village Green, and the Market Place Stage. Everyone who becomes a Market Maker, or renews an existing membership during the summer holidays, will receive a ‘Reclaim The High Street’ tote bag. They will also be entered into a prize draw, with a chance to win one of over 30 prizes, donated by market traders – from homewares and accessories to prints and cosmetics.
