Frome sends help to earthquake and tsunami victims in Indonesia

The ‘continuing generosity’ of the residents of Frome and surrounding area has resulted in a ‘marvellous amount’ of £1,357 being raised for Shelter Boxes for people suffering from the effects of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami, as well as other humanitarian disasters worldwide.

Ian Buick , Rotary Club of Frome press officer said, “Once tax relief in the form of Gift Aid is added, the total will be boosted to £1,696.26.

“Frome Rotary received an urgent message on 3rd October from Rotary clubs in Indonesia, appealing for help in the form of emergency shelter and water treatment. Local Rotary clubs are partners with two important UK charities, ShelterBox and Water Survival Boxes. It was decided to hold a collection in aid of ShelterBox which took place around the town on 6th October.

“Frome Rotary president, Norman Elmer, expressed a huge thank you to everyone who turned out on such a cold and wet day.”

He said “The weather definitely had a negative influence on the number of people in the town centre, but not on their willingness to give to this urgent and worthwhile cause.   Thank you to Rotary Club of Frome, Frome Town Rotary and Frome Selwood Rotary club members, their partners and friends.  Special thanks also to Studio Prints for the use of their premises and for counting the collection and to Mendip Council for issuing a licence at such short notice. Well done and thank you Frome!”
