Frome group travel to ‘Extinction Rebellion’

Following the Frome Uprising events this month, highlighting the issue of climate change, a group from the town travelled to London for the launch of Extinction Rebellion.

Extinction Rebellion is a nationwide non-violent uprising of ordinary citizens, seeking to push the British Government to respond to the climate emergency and the mass extinction of life we are now witnessing.

In a report this week the World Wildlife Fund stated that nearly two-thirds of animal populations had been wiped out since 1970 and science experts have said that we have only 12 years left to limit climate catastrophe.

At the Extinction Rebellion launch last Wednesday over a thousand people gathered in Parliament Square to hear a declaration demanding the government to tell people the truth about how bad the situation is, and to enact legally-binding policies to reduce carbon emissions in the UK to zero by 2025. This will require initiatives and mobilisations similar to those enacted in Britain during World War Two.

There are a growing number of people in Frome who are waking up to the urgency to act to protect and restore life on Earth for future generations.

A large group from Frome will be taking part in peaceful actions of civil disobedience in London on 17th November alongside groups from across the country. There will also be actions in Frome and there are plans to hold a Climate Café for people to discuss their concerns and find out more.
