Bringing German Carnival to Frome

Story posted on

Frome Twinning Association will be staging a new free event for Frome children and families during the half-term holiday.

The twinning association reports, “Wanting to promote an understanding of the traditions and cultures of our twin towns, we will be bringing our version of their traditional carnival to Frome.

“Carnival in Murrhardt marks the start of Lent with a costumed parade to the Town Hall, where the Mayor is held to account for all he has done, or not done, during the year. The costumes worn for the parade all have their roots in historical events in Murrhardt’s past, and we have chosen to focus for our version on two of the characters, the ‘Wasserfratz’ and the ‘Feuerbarthl’.

“Frome’s event will start with a German Carnival mask-making workshop organised by the Children’s Festival from 1.45pm to 2.30 pm on Thursday 21st February in Vallis First School. At the same time, children will have the opportunity to develop questions or suggestions for the Mayor of Frome. At 2.45pm children and families will form a carnival procession to the Town Hall. Children are invited to come in fancy dress for this and will wear their masks.

“On arrival at the Town Hall, we will demand the attendance of the Mayor. Cllr Rich Ackroyd has kindly agreed to take part and children will be able to put their questions and comments to him in the Council Chamber. This event is being targeted at 6-12 years old, but younger or older members of the family are also invited to come along. Numbers are limited, so booking is essential. Call Frome Twinning Association on 01373 462431 to book a place or for further information.”
