Age UK Somerset runs “Stay Strong Stay Steady” classes for older people in Frome

Story posted on

If you are worried that you sometimes feel unsteady on your feet, or perhaps you have a family history of osteoporosis or Parkinson’s, you may be interested in a group that is running in Frome.

The “Stay Strong Stay Steady” sessions, provided by Age UK Somerset and Somerset County Council, are designed specifically to help prevent damaging falls.

The exercise programme was developed at the University of Otago Medical School in New Zealand and is an evidence-based programme that has proved to be very effective.  The aim is to help participants rebuild muscle strength and improve balance, helping to increase confidence and giving them a better chance of remaining independent.

The specially developed classes are led by qualified instructors and are held in community venues. They are accessed by referral only and people will need to complete a simple health questionnaire to check the class is right for them.

The classes run weekly and cost just £4 per session. The friendly, relaxed atmosphere also provides a great opportunity to meet people and make new friends.

For more information about the class being held in Frome, please contact Michelle Purnell at Age UK Somerset on 01823 345626 or email michelle.purnell@ ageuksomerset.org.uk. Alternatively, you can ask your GP or other health professional to refer you.
