Trophy presentations made for Lions Club sponsored swim

Story posted on

THE Lions Club of Frome held their annual sponsored swim trophy presentation ceremony recently.

The club reports, “Lion President Peter Rumming welcomed the participants and presented them with their trophies and cheques. At the time of going to print there is still some outstanding money to be collected but it is anticipated that the swim has raised in excess of £4,000

“The swim, which is one of the Lions’ longest running events, was first held in 1986 and in that time, has raised over £220,000 for local charities. The event allows teams to raise money for their own causes, as well as supporting the Lions’ designated charity. The money raised by the teams is divided between the Lions’ charity and the swimmers’ own charity or cause.

“For this years’ event, the Lions’ chosen charity is The Julian Wort Memorial Fund which is the local branch of National Charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) which raises awareness of SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome) and provides medical information and  support.

“Shirley Wort from the charity was in attendance and informed those gathered on its history and future proposals. She said the money raised from the swim would go towards holding another screening in Frome early next year. She thanked the Lions and all of the participants for their generous support.

“Presentations were made to the following:

“John Barrow Cup (best performing school chosen by the Lion President) – Selwood Academy

“Team under 11 completing most laps – Springmead School (58 Laps)

“Gerald Williams Shield (most sponsorship by organisation with more than one team) – Frome Swimming Club (£1,200)

“The team raising most sponsorship – Frome Scouts (£581.95)

“The team completing the most laps (non swimming club) – Making Plans for Nigel (75 laps)

“The Aggregate Industries’ Cup (team completing the most laps) – Frome Swimming Club (75 laps).

“The Lions are indebted to Aggregate Industries who once again generously sponsored the event which covered the cost of pool hire and sundry expenses, which meant that all monies raised by the event went to charity.”
