Skydiving daredevils to jump for African orphanage

Story posted on

FIVE Frome locals will jump out of a plane next month to raise money for  charity.

The group are taking part in the skydive on Saturday 13th July in support of Small is Beautiful Africa, a charity raising money to support a small orphanage called Kankobe Children’s Home, which lies close to the equator in Uganda.

The skydiving daredevils include, Stacy Grant, who is the daughter of Stewart Grant – trustee of the charity. Joining her are Aaron Bullus, Andrew Doel, Kate Levi and Mike Jackson. The group are raising money for a library at the orphanage.

Small is Beautiful Africa is run by Frome local Stewart, alongside his brother Kevin Grant and family friend Andrew Smith. The trio took over the charity from Stewart and Kevin’s mother, Patricia Grant, when she died in 2017. Patricia set up the charity after she spent a year in Uganda where she met the nun who at that time ran the orphanage.

Speaking to Frome Times, Stewart said, “We are so grateful to all the skydivers taking part – the money they raise will help us to build the Pat Grant Memorial Library, in memory of my mum. £11,000 is needed to complete the build.

“The sole aim of our charity is to make enough money to help the orphanage become self-sufficient.

“Projects include sinking a well on the orphanage’s land. There is over 60 acres of land, but no water for the orphanage to grow crops. A well would help them become self-sufficient, growing their own food, and possibly help them make money by selling the excess.

“We also want to refurbish the workshops at the orphanage to carry out more vocational training. My mum also set up a scheme that raised enough money to pay for one of the girls to go to university. She has since graduated, and we are now supporting a boy to go through university. This is an ongoing project for the charity.”
