51st Annual Flower Show of the Horticulture Society

Story posted on

Following on from last year’s Golden 50th Annual Flower Show of the Frome Selwood Horticulture Society, members will once again be presenting their home grown/made produce when they stage their 51st Show at Selwood Academy on Saturday, 24th August, from 1pm.

The society has grown to be a thriving evergreen in Frome since its beginnings at the old Technical College in Park Road in 1966.  Germinating from the natural competition between vegetable and flower growers, the first show was held in 1968.  The cups and trophies record this rich heritage, with names inscribed that are synonymous with their specialty.  Come along to see who is presented with amongst many, the Holton and Lintern cup for vegetables, the Fred Phillips Trophy for best pot plant, the Mike Meaden cup for begonias or the Joan Biggs Trophy for water colour painting, along with the Showering Cup for Best Exhibit in Show.  Keen competition is demonstrated amongst the floral artists, bakers and photographers, with only one ‘Best in Class’ to be won in each.

Above all, the club thrives from its friendship with a common interest, so why not come along to see what the members have grown, baked, photographed or painted?  A colourful afternoon is assured, with teas on sale to encourage ambling.

At 4pm Christopher Bailey-Green, chair of governors at Selwood Academy will be presenting prizes.  All welcome.
