Frome to host annual twin town event

Story posted on

Visitors from Frome’s twinned towns in Germany, France and Poland will be heading to the town on 19 September for the annual quadripartite event. Every year, the event moves between each of the four European towns and this year it is Frome’s turn to host.

A packed programme of events has been planned by Frome Town Council and Frome Twinning Association to showcase what Frome has to offer and build long-lasting friendships between the four towns.

Mayor of Frome, cllr Mark Dorrington said, “We very much look forward to welcoming guests from our twinned towns. It promises to be a full weekend bursting with opportunities to make connections, learn from our neighbours and introduce them to some of the town’s great community events such as Frome Carnival.”

The formal opening ceremony will take place on Friday 20th September in the Memorial Theatre at 11.30am. Frome residents are welcome to come along and hear presentations from each of the towns. Later in the afternoon there will be a tree planting ceremony in Victoria Park to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Twinning Charter.

Other activities include a trip to Frome College for the young visitors to meet with locals and the chance to take part in a special programme of youth activities in the Frome YMCA. There will also be a formal dinner of traditional British food at the football club on the Friday night and a trip on Saturday before the evening Carnival parade.

The closing ceremony will be at 9.30am at the Bennett Centre on Sunday 21st September with coffee and a special celebration cake for visitors and hosts. This will be followed by a special ecumenical service at St. John’s Church at 11.30am which is open to all.

Frome Town Council also offers young people aged 18-25 the opportunity to take part in work placements in Murrhardt, Germany. Opportunities like this enable local young people to pick up core skills related to their career of choice, while experiencing a different culture.
