Frome’s Library of Things cuts waste and saves cash

Story posted on

Frome’s unique Share shop, which lends over 700 items to the local community for a small donation, has published a new impact report and say the results are worth celebrating.

“Between April 2018 and March 2019 476 items were borrowed 1,435 times, saving residents an incredible £62,620. Sharing instead of buying has also helped to save 92 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, 117 tonnes of raw material and 10 tonnes of manufacturing waste.

“Set up in 2015 by Edventure Frome CIC in partnership with Frome Town Council, SHARE reduces waste and environmental impact by offering items for people to borrow instead of buying. The shop has a real variety of items including lawnmowers, power tools, blenders, wine glasses and bunting. Recent grant funding means that the shop now has lots of new items from inflatable kayaks to bell tents to a PA system and a bubble machine.”

Mayor of Frome, cllr  Mark Dorrington said, “SHARE really harnesses our town’s community spirit and is such a simple way for residents to save money, while accessing the things they need. Whether you’re organising a camping trip, getting stuck into a DIY or craft project, planning a party or just wanting to try before you buy, SHARE is bound to be able to help you on your way.”

First time Share Shop borrower Ellie said, “I joined SHARE because I wanted to support such an amazing project. I had my family coming to camp nearby and we needed multiple items, like a gazebo, and camping table, which would have cost us hundreds of pounds brand new and would have rarely been used. Instead, we were able to borrow everything we needed for under £20 including a paddling pool which kept the kids entertained for hours!”
