Frome broadcaster wins national radio award

Local radio broadcaster, Jenna Myles, has won the National Community Radio Award for Best Newcomer for her shows on Frome FM.

The result was announced at a packed awards night in South Wales on Saturday, where 200 people from community radio stations all across the country gathered to hear the winners be revealed and to celebrate UK community radio.

Jenna took home the prestigious award, recognising outstanding achievement for people new to the radio in the past 12 months, triumphing over competition from stations in Derbyshire, Buckinghamshire, Lancashire and Oxfordshire.

Jenna said: “I’m so excited to win this national award and bring the trophy home to Somerset and Frome FM. I didn’t realise I’d have to make an acceptance speech on the night, but it was a great opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who supports and listens to the programmes I make. Community radio is such a great way to bring people together and I’m passionate about celebrating Somerset on my shows”.

Frome FM director, Jennie Smith said, “Jenna is a brilliant ambassador for Somerset and for community radio. She works so hard on every element of her shows, people love chatting to her on air and we’re so proud of her for receiving this national recognition. It’s a huge moment for Jenna, for Frome FM and for Somerset”.

After founding the popular online blog ‘Somerset cool’, which celebrates the unique places, people and events happening all across the county, Jenna decided to bring it to life on community radio with her monthly talk show ‘Somerset cool live’ – and that’s not all.

Jenna created and presented a 2-hour Christmas Day special and a 24-hour non-stop radio broadcast, to raise money for Somerset and Dorset Animal Rescue and Lurcher SOS. The show attracted a local, national and global audience and raised £2,500 for the charities. Channel 4 also visited Frome FM, to film Jenna’s charity auction collaboration with local cake sculptor, Zoe Burmester, for national television, during a special follow-up radio show created by the Somerset award winner.

Jenna has another exciting fundraising radio idea in store for 2020, which she will be planning in the new year.
