Hunting Raven presents ‘the outstanding travel writer of our time’

Hailed by John Le Carré as ‘the outstanding travel writer of our time’, Rory MacLean is a writer with incredible stories to tell.

On Friday 29th November, Rory will be coming to Frome to talk about his new book ‘Pravda Ha Ha’.

When the Berlin Wall fell, Rory travelled from Berlin to Moscow, exploring lands that were – for most Brits and Americans – part of the forgotten half of Europe.

This exploration formed the basis of his bestselling title ‘Stalin’s Nose’. Now MacLean retraces his original journey, backwards, to find out why the great hopes of 30 years ago have come to nothing.

‘Pravda Ha Ha’ unearths the realities of Eastern Europe, drawing on the stories of individuals to create a dark, anarchic portrait of the people who ran off with all the wealth, of the people left behind, and of betrayed lands with porous borders open to rampant corruption from drugs to arms

In Moscow, MacLean meets Russia’s Chicken Tsar and samples the secret (and seemingly hallucinogenic) blond truffle called ‘Putin’s Pecker’. He befriends an illegal African immigrant making for the UK and plays video games with a St. Petersburg cyber-hacker who waged war by hacking emotions, managing multiple Facebook and Twitter accounts on behalf of the nefarious, so-called Internet Research Agency.

The event will take place in the Naval Room upstairs in The Archangel, Frome (doors at 7.30pm). Tickets are just £4 and can be booked online at www.bit.ly/Rory Maclean or by contacting Hunting Raven on winstone books3@gmail.com or 01373 473111.
