Frome kitten hitches lift to Bristol with delivery driver

AMISSING kitten from Frome surprised his owners when he was found safe and well in Bristol after a two-week search.

Abby and Mark Hazell’s six-month old tabby cat, Ziggy, disappeared shortly before Christmas, prompting a local campaign to find the missing feline.

However, unbeknownst to the couple, the ‘bold’ and inquisitive’ kitten had stowed away inside a delivery driver’s van and was now living a new life in Bristol as ‘Mya’.

“The delivery guy found Ziggy in the back of his van  when he stopped in Bath after visiting our street in Frome that day,” explained Abby to Frome Times. “The delivery driver had no idea where Ziggy came from, so he contacted a friend in Bristol and asked him if he wanted a kitten – Ziggy is micro-chipped, but unfortunately they didn’t think to take him to a vet.”

Abby and Mark were supported by friends, neighbours and people online in the hunt for Ziggy. “The whole of Frome got involved,” said Abby, “and the support on Facebook was immense. People I have never met have been contacting me about Ziggy, offering their help. We had loads of people knocking on doors.

“We handed out 400 flyers, and put up about 100 posters – stationery shop PostScript were  very helpful, they gave us our first batch for free. Frome Town Council even helped by putting up posters on their noticeboard.

“However the search provided no leads, it was very strange. It wasn’t until the delivery guy came back to our road and bizarrely saw one of the original posters – he then got in contact with his friend in Bristol and told him that he may have our kitten.”

Abby and Mark were reunited with Ziggy after two weeks apart on Saturday 4th January.

“It was a pretty emotional reunion,” said Abby. “We were devastated over Christmas – it ruined our Christmas – the house felt so empty without him.

“He’s not allowed out for a while now! And when he is, I think we are going to put a GPS tracking device on his collar – it might be interesting to see where he goes!”
