The Astonishing Yuri Goloubev at Fair Frome charity concert

Story posted on

Frome Jazz Club, The Royal Society of Arts Frome, and Fair Frome has announced a charity concert to support Fair Frome, featuring the astonishing double bassist Yuri Goloubev.

Organisers say, “Double bassist Yuri Goloubev’s extraordinary playing has to be heard to be believed. A leading artist in the classical world since 1990, he was awarded the title “Honored Artist of Russia” in 2002. He switched to jazz in 2004, since when his work as both leader and sideman has attracted awards one after another.

JazzTimes wrote, “Goloubev’s playing is a sound of beauty with impeccable technique and heartfelt feel.”

So as to give Yuri’s playing the spotlight it deserves at this gig for Frome Jazz Club, he appears without horn section or drums, in a duo setting with pianist Keith Harrison-Broninski.

Fair Frome (www.fairfrome.org) is a local charity that helps to alleviate the effects of poverty for local people, offering practical support such as ensuring that everyone has access to food, furniture, white goods and kitchen equipment.  Fair Frome also aspires towards greater financial, educational, social and health equality in Frome and runs projects designed to bring people together from different backgrounds and across generations to find common solutions. They run real projects which make a real difference for real people.

In the interval, there will be a short talk highlighting the all-round value to young people of music education. When policymakers and school administrators need to cut budgets, the first casualties are often music and other arts-related subjects – but even for schools laser-focused on improving numeracy/literacy, putting music on the back burner is a false economy. Large-scale research consistently proves how music-related activities generate significantly higher scores in science, maths, and English exams, as well as providing other psychological, physical, and social benefits that improve life chances.

Frome Jazz Club presents The Astonishing Yuri Goloubev (in association with Fair Frome, and the Royal Society of Arts) on Friday 1st May at Christ Church, Christchurch Street West, Frome. BA11 1EH at 7.45pm. Tickets are  £13.52 – £16.76
