Rave reviews for local stonemason’s new book

Story posted on

ABOOKabout the history of British architecture, written by Frome stonemason Andrew Ziminski, has received rave reviews from a number of national publications.

‘The Stonemason – A history of building Britain’ tells the story of how Britain was built – from the inside out, stone by different stone, culture by different culture, in a journey by canoe along river, canal and sea – and it has been described as ‘fascinating’ by The DailyMail, and ‘entertaining’ by The Spectator.

BBC Countryfile Magazine said, “A wonderful behind-the-scenes history, where time works on a different scale and stone is a living, breathing entity . . . by a master craftsman whose expertise connects him to the generations that came before him.”

The book was launched prior to Covid-19 lockdown, and it has also been reviewed by The Times, The Daily Telegraph, Literary Review, and Evening Standard, amongst others.

Andrew – who has worked as a stonemason for the past 25 years, and has worked on numerous projects including repairs to a megalithic burial chamber, the reconstruction of a Roman temple façade to an Anglo-Saxon shrine and Salisbury’s medieval cathedral – told Frome Times, “The book was launched at Hunting Raven with the help of the mayor just before lockdown – so bad timing there! But in spite of that, I’m pleased to say it has been selling really well and has had some fantastic reviews  – unbelievable! I’ve had so many reviews that I have set up a website to host them all.”
