Issue 302 – Prolific burglar awaits sentence

A prolific house burglar who committed 105 burglaries in the space of 10 months is due to be sentenced tomorrow, 11th June.

34-year-old Lee Dixon, from Bath, committed burglaries in towns and villages across the whole of the South West, including a handful in the Frome area. He stole jewellery from the homes, particularly gold.
Nicola Caffrey, from Wiltshire Police’s priority crime team told Frome Times, “The 105 burglaries were spread across the Wiltshire constabulary, Avon and Somerset, Thames Valley, Hampshire, and Dorset – all between May 2009 and March 2010.
“He was not known to the police before which is why it took us a relatively long time to find him. As far as we can see, he had not committed any burglaries before May 2009.
“There was no evidence of a drug or gambling addiction. He says he lost his job and wanted to get money to live – to buy the bare necessities. He’s not your normal burglar.”
The police eventually caught Lee Dixon, with the help of forensics and CCTV footage of him after he used stolen Marks & Spencers vouchers in Bath.
Nicola Caffrey said, “The stolen vouchers were used in the Bath store and CCTV footage tracked him to the Podium shopping centre in Bath.”
Lee Dixon was arrested in March this year and is due to be sentenced on 11th June.

  • Frome walking buddies raise vital funds for children’s charity

Two Frome friends have raised more than £2,000 in an ultra-walking challenge for a charity which supports children and families during hospital stays.

David Wye, owner of Domesticare in Keyford, was joined by his friend Elaine Keene for the 50km event in London recently. The pair have completed various challenges over the years and finished the walk in six hours and 42 minutes, their best time yet.

They raised £2,040 for Time is Precious, a volunteer-run charity which helps create a more comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for children and their families in hospital.

  • Cycling challenge raises £4,000 for motor neurone disease charity

Hundreds of cyclists have raised £4,000 for motor neurone disease research and support by taking part in a charity ride from Longleat.

The Lionheart Sportive returned on Sunday 11th October after a decade away, with 300 cyclists choosing between 100-mile and 100-kilometre routes through the hilly Wiltshire and Somerset countryside. The event was organised by Frome cycling shop Pronto Bikes.

This year’s ride raised money for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which funds research into motor neurone disease (MND) and supports people affected by the condition. MND is a rare, progressive disease that damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

  • Museum’s 60th anniversary open day to seek new volunteers

Volunteers are being sought to support a range of roles at Frome Museum as it marks six decades of sharing the town’s history.

Frome Museum is hosting an open day on Saturday 24th October to welcome new helpers and showcase its behind-the-scenes work.

The museum is run entirely by a group of over 50 volunteers. Throughout the open day, volunteers will be on hand to talk about what is involved in the museum, including exhibitions, children’s activities, reception, archives, collections, events, outreach, marketing, fundraising, research, copywriting, catalogue, IT and trustee activities.

  • Project marks decade of support for families

A community project in Frome has supported around 1,800 families over the past decade by providing toiletries and sanitary products to children and young people.

Frome Refresh was set up 10 years ago by former teacher Lesley Hooper after she heard about a similar project in Trowbridge and recognised the same need among families in Frome.

The scheme works with local schools to deliver essential supplies to families experiencing financial hardship.

  • Frome woman’s display raises awareness of baby loss

A display created by a Frome woman has given local people a place to remember babies who have died during pregnancy, birth or infancy, while opening up conversations about baby loss.

Charlotte Acerman, who works at The Cutting Bar in the Westway Precinct, invited anyone affected by baby loss to add a ribbon bearing their baby’s name to the display for Baby Loss Awareness Week.

Charlotte created the display after losing her own daughter, Cecilia-Grace, who died aged nine months. She said she wanted to give families a place to honour their babies and talk about their loss.

  • New scheme launched to secure future of Community Fridge

A scheme to keep the much-loved Community Fridge running for years to come has launched, with local people encouraged to take part.

The Community Fridge has started a ‘Friends of the Fridge’ scheme, where local people can sign up to contribute between £5 and £50 a month, helping to cover the everyday costs of keeping the fridge project running.

This includes essential equipment like cleaning supplies, staffing, food labels, upkeep and repairs and more.

  • Help shape Frome Town Council’s budget priorities

Residents are being asked to help decide what matters most when it comes to spending the money they contribute through council tax.

For the average household, council tax paid to Frome Town Council equates to around £4.72 a week, with 76% of households in council tax Bands A to C. As town councillors begin thinking about next year’s budget, they want to hear from local people about how that money should be spent and what priorities matter most to them.

Through the My Frome engagement platform, residents can take part in an interactive budgeting exercise and a short survey, helping councillors understand how people would balance spending across different areas of the council’s work and whether they feel it represents good value for money.

  • Mayor’s column

You will have noticed by now that I spend much of my time in this column celebrating our youth and their plans for the future.

I will do this throughout my year as mayor but will also reflect on memories of the town and how it has changed over the years. As someone whose family came to Frome in the early 1960s, I have seen much of this for myself but the town’s corporate memory is mostly held by Frome Museum.

Recently, I was pleased to attend the launch of a celebration marking 60 years of the museum. Exhibitions show the way it has developed in this time, from rooms in Church Steps to its impressive current home in North Parade. This building was originally the site of the Frome Literary and Scientific Institution. Originally this would have been a resource for the working people of Frome to improve their education and to socialise, but by the time I discovered it in the late 1970s it was somewhere only to play snooker!
