Issue 313 – Frome Court saved from closure?

MP David Heath, has welcomed news that Frome Magistrates Court could be saved from closure.

The magistrates court was under consultation for closure as part of a government proposal to modernise and improve the use of courts in England and Wales.
But following consultation by Lord Justice Golding, on behalf of the Lord Chancellor, Frome is one of the courts which he believes “should stay”. Local MP David Heath has consistently campaigned against these closures.
As part of the consultation, travel implications associated with moving the court from Frome to Yeovil was considered, along with the further implications for people travelling from outside of Frome, from rural areas.
In response David Heath MP said, “I’ve been arguing against these plans, because quite simply, this would have produced great expense and inconvenience to people from the Frome area that need to use these courts. I am glad to see that the Lord Chief Chancellor has echoed the points that I have made throughout the consultative process.”
More details will now be considered before a final decision is made on which courts should stay and which courts will face closure.
