Issue 313 – Time to Remember

A Service of Remembrance will be held outside the Memorial Theatre, Christchurch Street West, on Sunday, 14th November when the nation stops at the eleventh hour to remember all those who gave their lives or suffered injuries in conflict, both past and present.

People in Frome are invited to join the short outdoor service, which starts at 10.58am. After the two minute silence has been observed, local organisations will be invited to lay wreaths. The service will be preceded by the parade of veterans and local organisations. Those wishing to march should muster at the Keyford Drill Hall, Keyford, at 10.20am. The short, five minute downhill route to the Memorial Garden will march off at 10.50am. Christchurch Street West will be closed from Weymouth Road to the top of Bath Street from 10.30am until 11.20am.
When the service has finished and the parade has been dismissed, members of the public will be welcome to come forward to pay their own respects.  Poppies and crosses will be available at the Remembrance garden.
The Assembly Rooms will be open to the public after the service for hot drinks; donations being given to service charities. A bar will also be open.
It is expected that, as ever, a large number of people in Frome will observe the event to show their respect for those affected by conflict. Jane Norris, a committee member of the Frome RBL says, “Every year even more people attend. Last year we had about 200 observing, and about 100 marching, which is extraordinary really.
“I think people are watching on the TV and realising, and the younger generation are equally involved. It’s a tragedy we still have to see the coffins coming through Wootton Bassett, whatever your opinion on the war, I think people are touched and affected by the fragility of it all.”
