The Lions Young Ambassador awards are to recognise and promote young people between the ages of 15 and 19 who do good work in their communities, helping others in local charities and volunteer groups.
This year Jake Smaje represented Frome Lions at the district finals held in Newport on 16th January.
Jake, who is attending Frome College, has many interests including music, football and politics. When he was younger he organised a sponsored walk with Woodcraft Folk to raise money for an organisation called Survival. This helps tribes in the third world survive and pass on their unique customs for future generations.
Jake is also involved with the Scouts. After learning a lot of skills he now has become a young leader helping others and putting back what he has learnt. He says he enjoys the challenge of working with younger scouts and cubs. Jake is also active in the schools council and promoting Eco schools and raised money with monthly cake sales when at his middle school.
Since going to Frome Community College in 2008 he has become a member of the school eco schools team know as Frome Eco Warriors as well as the school council. Eco Warriors promote sustainable living, like recycling and preserving our environment for the future. Lastly he is a member of Sustainable Frome which supports ethical projects in the surrounding area.
The judges had a difficult decision to make as to who was to go to the multi district finals next month. They commended Jake for his good presentation and work. An older student from Ross on Wye, Ryan Green was selected narrowly in the end. He had worked with a charity which helped children who had lost a parent which he had himself lost his mother two years previously.
The Frome Lions would like to thank Jake for his efforts and wish Ryan all the best for next month’s finals in Dudley.
