Issue 319 – Third public meeting to address Saxonvale site

THE date of a third public meeting to discuss the future of the Saxonvale site has been set.

Residents have already raised strong concerns over the possibility of a large supermarket on the site. A third public meeting will be held on the 23rd March at the Cheese and Grain. This follows the last well-attended public meeting in January, where Mendip District Council planning officers John Meacher and Les Kimberly were present to explain the current planning brief for the site, which was created in 2005. The brief plans for a development of retail, housing, and open spaces.
It emerged last year that St James Investments are now looking at developing the site with a supermarket and additional retail space.
At the meeting, a list of alternative ideas for the site was created when people broke up into smaller groups to discuss their views of what the site could offer Frome. People have voiced their ideas of alternatives to a large supermarket – such as a hotel, conference facilities, a ten-pin bowling facility, and public open spaces, or a smaller supermarket.
• People will soon have a chance to see just how a large supermarket would physically impact on the landscape of Frome. On Sunday 27th March the size of the supermarket will be mapped out in Victoria Park so that people can get an idea of the scale of the development.
