GPs in Frome are launching a new walk-in urgent care service at the town’s minor injuries unit this week. GPs in Frome are launching a new walk-in urgent care service at the town’s minor injuries unit this week.

Following a series of extremely successful and well received pilot days earlier this year, triage nurses and nurse practitioners from the Frome Medical Practice are now working with emergency nurse practitioners at Frome Community Hospital’s minor injury unit to provide an urgent walk-in service.
The aim is to provide the convenience of a walk-in service to any patients registered with the Frome Medical Practice who have an urgent need to be seen the same day. Patient feedback from the pilot days was so positive that the medical practice and hospital wished to see the service extended.
Dr Mark Vose from Frome Medical Practice explained saying, “In the past, some patients have said that they sometimes find it difficult to make the decision as to where it is best for them to be seen for their particular ailment or illness.
“We hope that by locating our team of very experienced and highly skilled doctors and nurses at the community hospital’s minor injury unit, patients will have the convenience of knowing that if they need to be seen the same day then the new service will be available to them.
“We were very encouraged by the feedback we had from the patients who came on the pilot days. They really did feel this was an excellent addition to the services we offer. We will of course be reviewing the level of patient demand and want to see what sorts of illness people most frequently present us with.”
Sister Teresa Ashman, lead emergency nurse practitioner with Frome Hospital’s minor injuries unit, is also enthusiastic about this trial scheme. She said, “Our team has worked well with the GPs and practice staff. We all want to improve the level of service we offer to patients and we hope the walk-in service could help patients who might otherwise either delay getting treatment or end up making an unnecessarily visit to a busy district hospital accident and emergency department.”
The new urgent walk-in service operates from 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday and is available to any patient registered with the Frome Medical Practice.
Frome Community Hospital’s minor injuries unit is open from 8.00am until 11.00pm seven days a week. The hospital is located in Enos Way, Frome. BA11 2FH.
