Frome helps Children in Need!

FROME did its bit for Children in Need last Friday, with fancy dress, cake sales, and even a badminton marathon.

Every year the town supports the BBC’s annual fundraising appeal, which looks set to beat last year’s total with £26,757,446 raised from the BBC’s entertainment on the night alone.

Closer to home, one of the groups in Frome raising funds was Frome Town Youth Band, whose members came to rehearsal in their pyjamas (pictured above).

Meanwhile, Frome Badminton Club held their 12-hour sponsored badminton marathon. The club takes on the marathon every second year, and this year broke their record by raising £2,500.

The club says, “There were 24 players, with 13 of them being from Frome Junior Badminton Club. Over 200 games were played and many were fast and furious. By the time Clive Davis, junior club coach, rang the bell to end the marathon there were many exhausted players!

“Each player obtained sponsorship and over £2,500 has been raised. Gill Moore and Rosemary Evans, from [Frome’s] VB’s Badminton Club, played the marathon and then hosted a tea and cakes event which raised over £300 towards the total. The total amount raised this year for BBC Children in Need is a club record.

“A raffle was also held to raise funds and the club would like to thank Halfords, Boots, Co-op and Jackson Wines for donating raffle prizes.  Also thanks to Tony Pryce (Sports) for donating tubes of shuttles.

“Avalon Leisure also supported the marathon by providing courts and keeping the Frome Leisure Centre complex open for the whole night from 8.00pm on 16th November to 8.00am on 17th November.

“The event closed with many of the players enjoying a really welcome and excellent full English breakfast at “The Frome Flyer” and the club would like to thank to the Frome Flyer for providing much-needed and tasty sustenance. The club would also like to thank the many people who sponsored each player individually.  Would anyone who pledged money at the Frome Leisure Centre please either leave the money at the leisure centre or contact John Warman on 01373 463268.”
