THE LIONS Club of Frome held its annual charity golf day at Orchardleigh Golf Club on Friday 17th May, raising around £4,500 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
31 teams took part in this fundraising event, in support of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Motor neurone disease is a neurological disorder that affects cells that control muscle activity including speaking, walking, swallowing and general body movement. This is usually progressive in nature and causes increasingly debilitating disability and eventually an early death, as there in no known cure.
After the charity golf play finished, Lion Keith McLeod introduced Jordan Lawrence. Jordan explained that is part of a small group from Frome Collegians whose target is to raise a huge £35,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. This is in memory of a friend who had coached for many years at the Collegians before succumbing to motor neurone disease. They are raising funds through a variety of events climaxing with climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in a few days’ time.
At this point it estimated that the Lions Charity Golf Day raised about £4,500 to go to Jordan and his group’s fantastic total.
The Lions’ president, Chris Bailey Green wished Jordan and his group every success in their fundraising and climb on behalf of Frome Lions.
He then thanked the Golf Club at Orchardleigh for hosting such a successful day, for providing such superb golfing conditions and good weather, and for providing excellent hospitality with food and drink. He thanked the players for the time, energy and donations and for making it fun for everyone; and also his fellow Lions and their partners who worked hard in setting up and running this event.
Chris then presented the day’s winners with their prizes. The team that came first with the lowest score were Peter and Richard Maunder with Kevin Sarney and Andrew Price. Second was the seniors’ team from Orchardleigh: Malcolm Lloyd, Peter Jefferies, John Scott and Peter Forth.
The Frome Lions would like to thank all their sponsors as the event would not run without them, notably, Mongers solicitors from Bath, C.W Accountancy based in Frome, Brothers Drinks Co Ltd (a major drinks company based at Shepton Mallet), Thornbury Sports Ltd (who surface sports ground surfaces and offer general tarmacking services), Bath Investment Building Society, Barclays bank in Bath, and WCD Sleeman and Sons Ltd (who specialise in drilling and blasting). Beckington Motors, MAC (a civil and construction company based in Frome) and Mendip Golf Club and Academy.
The Frome Lions’ next event will be their annual fete on Saturday 8th June at Victoria Park between 12.30am and 4.00pm. There will be lots of attractions for all the family to enjoy!
