Oakfield were delighted to work alongside Frome Apple Group and the Fruitfull Project to host a well-attended Apple Day for the community this year.
As part of Apple Day, pupils were asked to come up with a great apple recipe idea and cook, using donated apples, products to give away and sell.
Children from Apple Core Club, alongside recipe competition winners, Immy and Yazmine, took up the challenge, and cooked a large amount of delicious toffee apple cakes, apple muffins and apple sauce.
The academy expresses a big ‘thank you’ to St Louis School for donating their orchard apples for the apple products as well as for pressing and giving away to visitors.
The cooked goodies were given to Routes Frome on Apple Day for the young YMCA residents to enjoy. Thanks goes to Sarah from Routes for attending the event to bring awareness to their work for Frome’s young people, and also for helping children make apple smoothies using pedal power! Apple Core Club sold some of the cooked goods, which raised £31 towards keeping the Discovery Orchard maintained.
Apple experts attended the event to identify rare varieties of apple, while a slideshow of the four year project was played to entertain visitors enjoying Fair trade tea and coffee, provided by the Oakfield fundraisers.
Visitors to the event were also able to sample and press their own apple juice, find out about bee keeping and the Organic Soil Association as well as buy a range of products provided by stall holders. Two tours also took place of the Academy’s Discovery Orchard and stall holder fees of £50 have been given to the Oakfield Fundraisers, as a thank you for their support of the Discovery Orchard.
Oakfield wishes to thank all visitors to this event and also organisers, Tasha Child (Oakfield), Barbra Lakin (Fruitfull Project) and Helen Johnson (Frome Apple Group). The Academy also wishes to thank Sustainable Frome and Frome Wholefood Shop (for their apple pressing power and support), Oakfield staff, Alison Flynn (Design and Technology teacher) TA’s Sue Edwards, Sue Ellis and all the Apple Core Club members and competition winners; a wonderful day was had by all.
