It’s time to fluff up your lion suit, dust down your scarecrow, oil up your tin man or slap on the green face paint as Frome gets ready for the Wizard of Oz World Record Attempt on Sunday 13th July.

The event, which will attempt to break the record for the most people dressed as Wizard of Oz characters, is now also being supported by Dorothy House Hospice Care who are gathering ‘Dorothys’ from around the county and raising money on the day.

Local cancer charity, PAC, will also be supporting the attempt which is taking place at the Cheese and Grain from 9.00am.

The cast from Spellbound, the youth section of Frome Musical Theatre Company will be in full costume ahead of their performance of the iconic musical at the Frome Memorial Theatre from Thursday 7th to Saturday 9th August.

One of the organisers Martyn Payne said, “Everyone is welcome on the day and it’s going to be a great occasion and a lot of fun. If you are planning to come, please think about dressing up. There are still 10 days left to make or hire a costume. Don’t be a cowardly lion, join in the fun!

“The record currently stands at 446 people, but with your help we know we can beat it!”

The organisers will be using the fun and frivolities to promote reading amongst local children and raise money to buy books for local schools.

The original film will be showing at the Westway Cinema, Frome at 12.45pm on the day of the attempt. Call the cinema on 01373 467088 for more details.

In order to qualify for the World Record, all participants must be wearing full costumes and must be instantly recognisable as the character they have chosen. Characters must be from the original story and can include: Dorothy, The Wizard of Oz, The Scarecrow, The Cowardly Lion, The Tin Man, Uncle Henry, Auntie Em, Glinda, Nikko, The Wicked Witch of the West, Toto and the Munchkins.

Those hoping to join in are urged to register beforehand, if possible   but if you can’t or have forgotten to, don’t worry, just come down to the Cheese and Grain at 9 am on Sunday the 13th of July and join in the fun.  We need people to assemble at 9am in Market Yard car park to be counted into the Cheese and Grain from 10am.
